We are fast-approaching the day when not only will strong positions on climate change be bipartisan, but the major parties will try to out-compete each other to drive the strongest policies.
Indeed the very survival of the conservative parties will depend on the speed with which they can make this transition.
We have already seen votes for the Greens fade as the Labor party strengthens its climate policy.
As we continue to be battered daily by a succession of reports of yet another unprecedented catastrophic weather event we must remember to express this at the ballot box.
The health of any democracy relies on a vigorous opposition but until the major conservative parties free themselves of the shackles imposed by the right-wing fanatics in their ranks they have foregone the right to govern. Bring on the federal election!
