Building community resilience

A number of local resilience groups have cropped up in the region in recent years and have seen neighbours forming networks and supporting each other.
Groups such as West End Resilience and Castlemaine Commons aim to support their neighbours and spread important messages such as fire safety.
The importance of these local social networks has really come the fore during the COVID lockdowns with community members working together to support each other, particularly the vulnerable.
Tomorrow evening Wednesday October 21 the Castlemaine Commons will be hosting a YouTube Show on ‘Building Neighbourhood Resilience’.
Castlemaine Commons member Emma King said forming stronger connections to our neighbours and looking out for each other had been part of navigating this difficult year, and many people were looking at ways to extend and deepen this.
“During the pandemic Castlemaine Commons has been hosting community conversations through a series of Zoom and YouTube live shows on building neighbourhood resilience and mutual aid,” she said.
“First up we kicked of this process with a YouTube conversation about ‘Community Collaboration for Bushfire Preparation’ a matter on everyone’s mind after last summer.”
Tomorrow night they will be discussing topics such as what is resilience? What we have learnt? What should we keep doing and what should we change?
A representative from the West End Resilience group will also share their experience of working together in lockdown, their strategies and what worked for them.
The project has been supported through the state government’s Community Activation and Social Inclusion initiative and is one of 10 projects being coordinated locally by Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Mount Alexander Local Support Network.
You can watch the show live tomorrow evening from 7.30pm on the Castlemaine Commons YouTube Channel. If you miss it, don’t dismay, past shows are also available to watch any time.
