Design nominated

A warehouse-style house in Kyneton is turning heads in the Building Designers Association of Victoria Building Design Awards.
The contemporary look is the work of Woodend Building Design and has been nominated for People’s Choice.
Architect Paul Youngs said the design was based around owner Sam Ryan’s desire for an industrial feel, with plenty of natural lighting and flexibility to allow for large family gatherings.
“The overall feel of the house is that of a modern warehouse with its polished concrete floors, use of internal recycle red-brick and feature timber sliding panel doors,” Mr Youngs said.
Located on a small corner allotment, he said the house required careful planning to achieve the best exposure for natural lighting. A team of four worked together on the project.
“The use of recycled red-brick gives the building a strong presence. The distinctive roofline with a mixture of traditional gabled roof and more modern skillion roof has created house with its own unique character,” Mr Youngs said.
“The client’s son was a bricklayer – so the choice of brick was an easy one! We’ve gone with recycled red-brick as they add a timeless element to the house.
“The house has been receiving a lot of local interest and feedback.”
The brick house is the first project Woodend Building Designs has entered into industry awards.
People’s Choice voting is now open and award winners will be announced at the National Gallery of Victoria on July 27.
