Trevor Scott (‘This is it’, Opinions, January 29) correctly pointed out the fallacies in the Morrison Government’s thinking proposing a new coal-fired power station in the Latrobe Valley and the deliberately misleading energy/climate arguments the LNP has put forward over the last few years.
Coal is no longer an economic option, and particularly if associated external human health and climate impacts are accounted for.
Victoria has an opportunity to transition to a new energy power supply (renewable), which for new build is cheaper than coal or gas and can better withstand higher predicted temperatures.
However we need to do much more than that.
We need urgent action on more low-emission houses with star ratings being lifted to eight as a start.
We also need to understand that a plan to transition our agricultural sector and transport sectors towards a low-carbon future is now urgent. Those sectors and others deserve time to make orderly adjustments.
LNP inaction in the face of changes required, based on high-level science and engineering information, can only be seen as incompetence and disregard for the future of our country in all aspects.
