Woodend plaza plan

A proposed Woodend Community Centre redevelopment plan aims to build a creative destination and revitalise the heart of the town.
The project’s draft masterplan opened for public comment last week and incorporates community feedback to explore options for a modern, multipurpose community service precinct.
Part of the proposal includes transforming the site from an underused block of land to a civic plaza destination for outdoor performances, live gigs, arts and culture showcases with the idea of generating activity and revenue for Woodend.
The masterplan also proposes an extension of the existing recreation activity to the north of the site to create an important recreation zone and encourage activity all day and throughout the seasons.
The masterplan includes provision for increased servicing and loading and major pedestrian gateways around the perimeter to create pathways for safe and accessible connection.
A ‘city wall’ is proposed to wrap around the site and formalise the precinct’s identity.
Council’s director for planning and environment Angela Hughes said feedback and findings from this round of community consultation, along with best practice technical advice, would inform the final business case and master plan.
“Council would like to acknowledge and thank the individuals and groups from the Woodend community who have contributed to the development of the draft plan so far,” she said.
“Now more than ever, we need to know what the community needs and wants from upgraded facilities at the Woodend Community Centre.”
Feedback submissions are open now until March 15 at 5pm. The draft master plan can be viewed online at mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay
Drop in sessions will be held February 24 at the Woodend Community Centre from 4-6pm, and March 6 at the Woodend Farmers Market from 8am-1pm. Check the council’s website to check these sessions will go ahead.
